Our Dental Services - Dental Hygiene Care

Kory, our registered dental hygienist has over 20 years experience working as an Edmonton dental hygienist in general and specialty practices. One of the goals of our Edmonton Dental Practice is to help you achieve and maintain optimal oral health through assessment, prevention and education. Kory will develop a personalized plan of care based on your needs. Some of the preventive care that she offers includes: review of your medical and dental history, assessment of gum tissue and dental health, digital x-rays, scaling and cleaning of teeth to remove plaque, tartar and stains, oral irrigation of gums, polishing teeth, fluoride treatments, sealants, education about oral health, etc.

Periodontal Health - Why You should have a dental hygiene assessment and recall visits based on your individual needs?

Periodontal Disease is a dental disease that affects your gums and is the number-one cause of tooth loss in adults. It is caused by a buildup of tartar and toxic bacteria or plaque around tooth surfaces. Although relatively painless, over time it will cause gums to become red, swollen, and prone to bleeding when brushing or flossing. Left unchecked, it can destroy the bone around the teeth and eventually lead to tooth loss.

Periodontal disease can be prevented or even reversed in the early stages. That's why Kory, our dental hygienist does a periodontal assessment when you come in for a check up and cleaning, so we can get a head start on gum problems if they are present.

Using a periodontal probe (slim instrument with measurements in millimeters), the dental hygienist or dentist can measure the natural space between the tooth and gums (called "sulcus"). A space of 1 to 3 mm is considered healthy and normal. If the space is 4 mm or more around a tooth, those areas will be recorded on the chart and reassessed at the next appointment. Kory does a periodontal assessment of your whole mouth at least once a year and reassesses areas of concern at every hygiene visit.

Daily brushing and flossing at home, and removal of tartar and bacteria at dental hygiene visits will help to prevent those natural spaces from progressing to bigger spaces or periodontal pockets. If these spaces become too deep (over 5 mm), they are more difficult for you to clean at home and can lead to infected gums. Based on your periodontal assessment, our dental hygiene staff will recommend appropriate treatment and recall frequency. This information is kept in your file to monitor your on going dental health.

A professional cleaning removes the tartar, debris, bacteria as will as stains and discolorations, so your mouth is healthier and yes, your smile will look brighter too!

If you have any questions or concerns about your oral hygiene care, please ask us at your next appointment. We want to make your visit to our Edmonton dental office as comfortable as possible.
